Measurement of deuterium density profiles in the H-mode steep gradient region using charge exchange recombination spectroscopy on DIII-D.

چکیده
Recent completion of a thirty two channel main-ion (deuterium) charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CER) diagnostic on the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42, 614 (2002)] enables detailed comparisons between impurity and main-ion temperature, density, and toroidal rotation. In a H-mode DIII-D discharge, these new measurement capabilities are used to provide the deuterium density profile, demonstrate the importance of profile alignment between Thomson scattering and CER diagnostics, and aid in determining the electron temperature at the separatrix. Sixteen sightlines cover the core of the plasma and another sixteen are densely packed towards the plasma edge, providing high resolution measurements across the pedestal and steep gradient region in H-mode plasmas. Extracting useful physical quantities such as deuterium density is challenging due to multiple photoemission processes. These challenges are overcome using a detailed fitting model and by forward modeling the photoemission using the FIDASIM code, which implements a comprehensive collisional radiative model.

Comparison of neoclassical predictions with measured flows and evaluation of a poloidal impurity density asymmetry
The study and prediction of velocities in the pedestal region of Alcator CMod are important for understanding plasma confinement and transport. In this study we examine the simplified neoclassical predictions for impurity flows using equations developed for plasmas with background ions in the Pfirsch-Schlüter (high collisionality) and banana (low collisionality) regimes. B flow profiles for H-m...
متن کاملBeam emission spectroscopy for density turbulence measurements on the MAST spherical tokamak.
Beam emission spectroscopy (BES) of the energetic deuterium (D(0)) heating beams can provide a means of characterizing the density turbulence in tokamak plasmas. First such measurements have been performed on the MAST spherical tokamak using a trial BES system, which shares the collection optics of the charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy system. This system, with eight spatial channels c...
متن کاملHigh time-resolved, 2D imaging of type-I ELMs in DIII-D using a image-intensified CID camera
The evolution of 2D emission profiles of D-alpha and C III during type-I edge localised modes (ELMs) has been investigated in DIII-D using a tangentially viewing gated, intensified charge-injected device (CID) camera. The measured CIII emission profiles indicate transient inner leg attachment with the arrival of the ELM heat pulse. The measured D-alpha emission profiles during an ELM cycle show...
متن کاملGlobal gyrokinetic simulations of the H-mode tokamak edge pedestal
Global gyrokinetic simulations of DIII-D H-mode edge pedestal show two types of instabilities may exist approaching the onset of edge localized modes: an intermediate-n, high frequency mode which we identify as the “kinetic peeling ballooning mode (KPBM),” and a high-n, low frequency mode. Our previous study [W. Wan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 185004 (2012)] has shown that when the safety fac...
